About Ashtamudi Lake
Ashtamudi backwaters is called so because of its eight arms or channels or
eight braids.
Ashtamudi lake is the gateway to the backwaters of kerala. Ashtamudi lake was
included in the list of wetlands of international importance under the
ramsar convention.
The lake finds mention in popular malayalam films
songs ( like ashtamudikayalile , kattadichal kalielakum ashtamudi kaayal ) and
literature. There is a film Ashtamudikkaayal that was released in 1978
starring prem nazir jayabharathi adoor bhasi and sreelatha namboothiri.
This lake is 16
km long is the second largest lake in kerala second to vembanad lake.
