These houseboats are exclusively found in Kerala. They are large and slow moving. They have been modified from kettuvallams which were used in the past to carry goods in the canals of kerala.

These boat are made from wooden planks tied together with coir ropes.

The top portion is made from bamboo poles and palm leaves. a modern houseboat is built with all facilities of a small home like a bedroom, dining room, kitchen and bathroom. One can hire a houseboat to travel along the backwaters of kerala.
