This trip operates from Kottayam to Alappuzha. The first service departs from Kodimatha Jetty in Kottayam at 6:45 AM. There is sufficient parking space for two-wheelers in front of the jetty. A small hotel is also located nearby, where you can have breakfast before starting your journey, as there are no opportunities to buy food during the three-hour trip to Alappuzha.
The first hour of the journey passes through the waterfront areas of Kottayam. This is one of the best ways to experience the rural life of Kuttanad. Many foreign tourists were also on board with me, enjoying this affordable boat service operated by the Kerala Government. There are numerous houses on both sides of the waterway. During the trip, you'll see around five manually operated bridges that local residents raise to allow the boat to pass. The boat is typically operated by a crew of about five members, including the conductor, helmsman, and lascars.
For anyone wishing to explore Kuttanad, this Kerala Water Transport Department service is the most economical option. While a houseboat trip can cost around INR 10,000, a family of four can complete this journey for less than INR 150. However, keep in mind that these government boats provide only basic facilities. Along the route, you'll also see many isolated areas surrounded by water with little or no human habitation.
After about one and a half hours, the boat enters the Vembanad Lake. From there onward, you'll see countless houseboats passing on both sides. Some of them are premium luxury houseboats. Around 9:20 AM, the boat reaches Alappuzha. As it approaches the Alappuzha Jetty, you'll notice many houseboats moored on both sides. The KSRTC Bus Stand is just about 100 metres from the jetty. You can either disembark and return home by bus or enjoy a cup of tea and board the same boat, which departs back to Kottayam at 9:45 AM.
