International Coir Museum , kalavoor alappuzha distict


The museum is the first of its kind in the world and will provide a vast range of information on the various milestones of the coir industry. It will also exhibit various machines, looms and a variety of products made using coir.

Location: At kalavoor about 10 km north of alappuzha town on the national highway 47.

The museum provides information on the history of the coir industry in the State of Kerala.

According to history James Darragh and Henry Smail established Darrah Smail & Co., the first coir factory in Alappuzha in 1859. A large number of industrialists followed suit to set up factories in alappuzha.

There is a souvenir shop also attached to the museum.




The National Institute of Coir Research and Training is also located here.
